Thirty years of music: The story of Mirror Visions

Mirror Visions Ensemble reached its 30th anniversary in 2022 with its three founding members still active in the group. To celebrate this milestone, and to shine a light on the unique contributions of Mirror Visions to the art song canon, It Was a Dream, Wasn’t It? The Story of Mirror Visions, 1992-2022 captures the back stories, the evolution of the ensemble, and the hopes of the current performers for its future.

It Was a Dream, Wasn’t It? tells how Tobé Malawista, Richard Lalli, and Scott Murphree worked to create new music (more than 100 commissioned pieces) to pour out into the world. The author talked to dozens of smart, fun, creative, brilliant, generous people who are doing what they love. It’s about more than music—it’s the story of love, loss, creativity, determination, the power of art, and the human spirit. Anyone who’s curious or involved in creative endeavors will find comfort, advice, wisdom, and humor in the story of the Mirror Visions Ensemble.

A tour de force.” Dorie B.

I originally thought that I would flip through the book and listen to the music, but I’ve actually been fascinated by it and I’m reading it cover to cover! I am not a person who knows a lot about music, but I’ m finding it so informative and entertaining that I keep reading.” Jan C.

“[This] is a great story, and a fine tribute as well as an honor for the protagonists and their community. And for the world of art-dreamers at large; it shows what we can conceive of and achieve.” Danny B. (musician)

What an elegant and eloquent testimony to Tobé’s vision and hard work through the years. You brought the journey to life in beautiful prose with pictures that take us through the creation and growth of Mirror Visions.” Charlotte R.

“[The] skillful capture of the humor that infuses the musical offerings of Mirror Visions is so vitally important. Without that humor, everything could fall flat. This is an exceptional book about exceptional people and how they coalesced into something wonderful.” Karlee G.

It did not put me to sleep!” Nancy N.
